There’s nothing like the smooth feel of the kimono. And the style of it. It carries so much tradition of the Japanese. It preserves their culture.
Most of all, I love that the formal kimonos are made of silk. It's like being wrapped in a cocoon of comfort and luxury with floral patterns that dance across the silk.
I look at the kimono and wonder how I can turn this into a scarf. One that is a fusion of culture yet carries tradition. A scarf that evokes the feeling of splendor, grace, and elegance, as well as comfort and luxury. Then I gaze at the bright colors from Yoruba aso ebi and infuse these bold colors into the scarves.
Ancient African scripts such as Adinkra and Nsibidi, Hebrew letters, and Chinese characters carry stories of a time long ago. They hold traditions. So I added them to the scarves to be storytellers in their own right.
With these in mind, I designed the Flame, Mandala, and Tribal scarves. The Flame scarf has bold colors and a fusion of Hebrew letters and Chinese characters. The Mandala scarves have mandalas arranged in a floral pattern. And inside each mandala are Hebrew letters. Lastly, the Tribal scarves are a fusion of Nsibidi and Adinkra symbols. And the design was inspired by Nok Art and Yoruba doors.
These scarves celebrate humanity and traditions that are thousands of years old.
